Bucks Lake fuels reduction project started The U.S. Forest Service has started thinning and removing hazard tree within recreation sites and around facilities in the Bucks Lake area. “The Bucks Lake area is a popular recreation site in the Plumas National Forest, making it a top priority for hazard abatement and fire protection,” said Mike Donald, Mt. Hough District Ranger. Extinguishing fires has created unnaturally dense forests in many areas such as Bucks Lake. “When trees are packed this densely, they compete for water, soil, nutrition and sunlight, which in turn reduces the tree’s ability to withstand insects, disease and drought,” noted Donald. Depending on conditions, fires may also burn hotter in dense groups of trees making it less likely trees will survive the fire. The project was designed to reduce tree density, targeting unsafe trees, to make the forest healthier and also to account for visitor safety. “We took campsite shade and aesthetics into consideration as we choose the best trees to leave,” said Donald. Some large trees that were showing signs of root disease were marked to remove the potential hazard and allow younger healthy trees to thrive. Campgrounds in the project area include Whitehorse, Grizzly, Hutchins Group, Sundew and Mill Creek.

Random tip of the day: All summer I've had two hanging wasp traps to help keep the yellowjacket population under control. As the weather began to cool, the yellowjackets disappeared and I was about to remove the traps. That is, until I noticed stink bugs inside them! Yes, it seems thsoe nasty prehistoric looking critters are somehow attracted to the hanging traps. Not sure why, but I'm not gonna argue with it. Those traps are staying up as long as the stink bugs are around.
